Alternate ways to kill Polar Bears with 2 spears and stay alive.
Wildlife Science 309:-Advanced Polar Bearology

The idea is to always use a method of attack that will leave the polar bear afraid of you if you do not manage to kill him the first time. Otherwise you are dead before you get a second chance and you want to have a second chance to approach him if you don't get him the first time.

Bears you should never try to spear.

He will jump up and be prepared for battle. From that position it is natural to attack and his reactions can take over and pounce on whoever is around, guess who that is? So it is best to leave this one alone.

None of these three either. Bears often get involved in gang activity and their behavior is less predictable and more dangerous than the east side crips.

Bears that you can spear most of the time.

This bear is easy to spear as it is in the most vulnerable position that any animal can be in and he is completely at ease. So when you attack him it will both surprise him and startle him. His natural reaction is to jump up and retreat as fast as he can to the nearest safety. That may mean trees, a hill, a pack of high ice or just plain distance. Maybe 200 meters away.

By using this method you are both safe and can approach him a second time if he has not run too far away.

This next one can be approached from either of two directions.

1. Coming in from a low angle you would just rush the fellow and run the spear up into his heart area and then his life ends in seconds but if you then just twist the spear inside his heart he may not even move. Instant bear rug. That is some very tough flesh though and it is hard to twist the blade, especially when your hands are cold so I would lock my hands on the spear and roll as I dropped to the ground. Then I would attempt to roll again but the bear would usually jump up by then. By dropping to the ground he could not see me from the prone position and the spear's blade would act like a razor blade dicing up organs as it moved across the inside of his chest as I rolled.

Polar bears are far less sensitive to pain on their stomach than other animals, probably because of the cold water. So you can sometimes kill them before the pain even wakes them up.

However you may have made a mistake here. It appears that you are upwind from this guy because he smells you and is waking up and looking right up at you. However he is not sniffing the air to find out whether you are food or a strange looking bear so you have a few seconds before he can decide if you will make a good meal. You have to rush at him right then and scream as loud as you can to claim your massive bearhoodness instantly and boldly reclaim your territory and also claw at him (with your spear).

You may not hit a vital spot. In fact he is probably half way to the nearest safety by the time you get to where he was laying but that is not important because he thinks you are a bear and will respect you and your territory unless he decides to sneak back.

This works even if there are four bears as long as you can determine and attack the dominant bear the others will have the same fear and respect for you.

2. The second approach brings you in from above and that makes this bear a relatively easy target. You first get as close as you can. You must watch his nostrils very closely as you move in and if they quiver it means you have about three seconds before he wakes up to the smell of food, and that is you. This particular bear is already sniffing the air so he already knows that you are excellent food so you have to kill him fast.*

The objective is to ram the spear right next to his head and right down into his chest. If you penetrate about a foot he will take the concept of your edibilty with him to his death within a few seconds since that is a fatal wound.

Beside watching his nose as you sneak up on him you have to make certain that he does not move his head back and forth. His ability is phenominal at sensing other animals. I guess it is a magnetic sense that he has which enables him to sense animal life in a snow bank or under ice. However his sense is very directional so by moving his head back and forth he can confirm that you are there. Then you have about ten seconds to spear him before he wakes up. Even when he wakes up he will not have determined that you are food yet so you might still have a chance to convince him that you arent by running directly at him and screaming.

If you can get to within five feet with him laying flat the best way I found is to hold the blade of the spear horizontal and run the spear straight in through his gullet and go in only about a half a meter, then lift up on the handle and move it back and forth. You have to do this really fast as he will jump right up within a few seconds to kill you.

That sweeps the blade across the chest cavity and severs about everything inside but by lifting the handle it assures that the major arteries to the brain get severed first. He will be dead before he can even think about getting up.

*In any Polar Bear situation you have to get as close as you can to him, without him getting a good strong 'whiff' (smell) of you. Smell was, or used to be, such a strong overwhelming factor that a strong smell could completely overide their thinking and do so in a half second. They would be considering what kind of bear you were and suddenly they would get your smell and then you immediately became FOOD.

If you had dogs then they would run across the bears path barking and draw him off. The bear doesn't think in this state so he goes right after the dogs. Then the dogs would surround him and I would get involved. The dogs would go around to the other side and draw his attention.

Then I could take this same shot. You have to be careful from this angle because if you throw too high you can hit one of your own dogs. However you usually lost at least two dogs this way and they were your best and bravest dogs. So I developed these other methods of hunting polar bears alone and got an incredible reputation for doing so.

(I wonder if the gene that caused some of the polar bears that smelled human to just think food and charge was just in some polar bears? Do a few still have this gene? Was the gene eliminated from the gene pool of bears because of the advent of guns.)
